The Albany County district attorney has joined a special prosecutor who was appointed to investigate the sexual harassment case going on in the New York Assembly. This occurred because protesters in New York City called for Brooklyn Assemblyman Vito Lopez to resign. He has been accused by four female staffers that he sexually harassed each of them. Lopez refused to resign. Under state law, even if the Joint Commission on Public Ethics (JCOPE) finds Lopez engaged in illegal conduct, his final punishment would be determined by the Legislature’s Ethics Commission. Since the writing of this article, Lopez has been removed as the Assembly’s Housing Committee chairman. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act regulates various types of discrimination including gender discrimination. Additionally, sexual harassment statutes prohibit sexual harassment in the workplace.
