The current and former owners of the Sahara hotel-casino in Las Vegas will pay $100,000 to settle a lawsuit which the EEOC filed on behalf of a man of Middle Eastern descent. The aggrieved man claimed workplace discrimination on the basis of national origin. The EEOC said that Ezzat Elias was subjected to harassment by the Sahara based on his national origin (Egyptian) and that the Sahara didn’t protect him from discriminatory conduct by coworkers and supervisors. Such conduct affected Elias who worked as a steady kitchen runner. The lawsuit alleges that Elias was subjected to repeated harassment in the form of comments and slurs. For example, Elias was being called “Bin Laden,” “Taliban,” and being told to “go back to Egypt.” In addition to the settlement, the hotel’s owner will pay $15,000 to the Nevada Equal Rights Commission and agreed to appoint an equal employment opportunity consultant to ensure the Sahara effectively addresses workplace discrimination, harassment and retaliation. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects people from racial, sexual, or religious discrimination. In order to file a claim, a charge may be made by mail or in person at the nearest EEOC office. As a time limit, all charges must be filed with EEOC within 180 days from the date of the alleged violation, in order to protect the charging party’s rights. This 180-day filing deadline is extended to 300 days if the charge also is covered by a state or local anti-discrimination law. The information which must be provided is:

II. The name, address, and telephone number of the respondent employer, employment agency, or union that is alleged to have discriminated, and number of employees
III. A short description of the alleged violation (the event that caused the complaining party to believe that his or her rights were violated); and
