Skin care company Nivea has issued an apology for an advertisement that ran in Esquire magazine last month. The advertisement for Nivea for Men featured a clean-cut, African-American male holding what appeared to be a mask of a black man with an Afro hair style and a beard. The copy accompanying the ad read, “Look Like You Give a Damn. Re-civilize Yourself.” The advertisement created a stir over twitter and other social media websites. Nivea released a statement: “We are deeply sorry to anyone who may take offense to this specific local advertisement. After realizing that this ad is misleading, it was immediately withdrawn.” Full article.
Although not cited as a reason for the gap, one can not ignored that there still stands to be an overwhelming amount of discrimination in the workforce. In the workplace, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 makes it illegal to discriminate against someone on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, or sex. The law forbids discrimination when it comes to any aspect of employment, including hiring, firing, pay, job assignments, promotions, layoff, training, fringe benefits, and any other term or condition of employment.
