Walt Disney Adopts Hijab Costume for Muslim Employee

The Walt Disney company has designed a hijab costume for a Muslim employee who had been banned from wearing a full headpiece.  The female employee is to be given a specially created headscarf, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations.  Officials at the park decided to work with Noor Abdallah, 22, who was originally told she was banned from wearing the hijab while at a Disneyland Resort ticket booth.  The Disney company came up with a design to match her costume and meet her cultural needs with a blue scarf topped with a beret.  Full Article

Earlier this year, another Muslim woman urged that Disney permit her to wear the hijab in her position as hostess at Disney`s Grand Californian Hotel. That case is ongoing.  The Muslim worker filed a religious discrimination complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The hostess is challenging Disney’s policy forbidding the wearing of her hijab, a religious head covering, claiming that the policy is illegal and wrong.  Disneyland spokeswoman Suzi Brown stated that the company has allowed the employee to wear her hijab while working, but not in front of customers. However, the employee’s union is claiming that, despite the alleged accommodation, Disney’s action still constitutes a discriminatory practice.
