Doomsday Asteroid Scenarios Reflect the Importance of Proper Estate Planning

Around 6am on early Wednesday morning, September 8, 2010, a small asteroid, tagged as asteroid 2010 RX30, passed within the moon’s distance from Earth, In addition, space watcher experts estimate that another asteroid, tagged as asteroid 2010 RF12 and about 20 to 46 feet in diameter, will do likewise later in the day by passing within 49,088 miles from earth around 5pm.  According to NASA, this double encounter is an unusual event that shows the need for closer monitoring of near space for Earth-threatening encounters.  An estimated 50 million objects pass through near-Earth space each day. However, this situation is particularly noteworthy because these two asteroids will pass so close to Earth on the same day and that NASA spotted them so far in advance. Yeomans stated that, “This demonstrates the system’s working on some level, but we need larger telescopes and more of them to find objects that are coming this close.”  Learn More.

Living in fear of the future and potential doomsday scenarios call to mind the valuable need for proper estate planning.  If scientists at NASA recognize the importance of planning ahead and working aggressively to face potential dangers to our earth, we as citizens of this planet should consider the everyday dangers we can encounter on a daily basis which can leave our loved ones without a safety net should we pass away prematurely.   Careful estate planning to incorporate a last will and testament, a revocable trust over your financial assets, a power of attorney and health care proxy as part of your estate will protect your assets and ensure that your family’s inheritances are not left to be taxed entirely by state of New York.
