60-Year-Old Adult Entertainer Gets $60K in Settlement From Former Employer

Mary Bassi is a Houston strip club worker who claimed she had been fired after 13 years at the club in 2006 because of her age, in which she was 56 at the time of her lawsuit. As result, she received $60,000 from her former employers.  At the time of her claim, two male managers of the former employee’s club called Cover Girls began making comments to Bassi about her age.  According to her lawyers at the EEOC, the managers would tell Bassi that she was “exhibiting signs of Alzheimer’s disease.”  Additionally, it was alleged that the managers began hiring younger waitresses to take over shifts for Bassi and then she was fired.  Read More.

According to the EEOC, business establishments are not exempt from the federal laws which protect employees from discrimination and adverse employment actions based on age no matter what sector they occupy.  The Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects people from racial, sexual, or religious discrimination. In order to file a claim, a charge may be made by mail or in person at the nearest EEOC office. As a time limit, all charges must be filed with EEOC within 180 days from the date of the alleged violation, in order to protect the charging party’s rights.   This 180-day filing deadline is extended to 300 days if the charge also is covered by a state or local anti-discrimination law. The information which must be provided is:

I.    The complaining party’s name, address, and telephone number;

II.    The name, address, and telephone number of the respondent employer, employment agency, or union that is alleged to have discriminated, and number of employees

III.    A short description of the alleged violation (the event that caused the complaining party to believe that his or her rights were violated); and

IV.    The date(s) of the alleged violation(s).
